Business School

VISION AND VALUES

Business and enterprise are at the heart of national growth and development, and this is reflected in the place that business education has within a Curriculum for Excellence. The Business School faculty offers opportunities for learners to develop the crucial skills and knowledge which will allow them to access, understand and contribute in a dynamic and complex business and enterprise environment.

Being skilled in using ICT is essential if children and young people are to be effective contributors, and to communicate and interact on a global scale.  Through the use of ICT as a learning and teaching tool, students overtake Curriculum for Excellence Experiences & Outcomes from within a number of curriculum areas:

  • Technologies - Using ICT to Enhance Learning; Business Contexts for Developing Technological Skills and Knowledge;
  • Social Studies – People in Society, Economy and Business;
  • Numeracy – Number, Money and Measure; Information Handling;
  • Literacy – aspects of Listening, Talking, Reading and Writing – set within the contexts of other curriculum areas;
  • Health and Well-Being – Planning for Choices and Changes – set within themed ICT projects.

The faculty is committed to working collaboratively with colleagues across the curriculum areas to promote ICT skills development within diverse learning contexts.  Students will benefit from inter-disciplinary learning experiences which will help them to make connections across the curriculum areas.

Whatever the career pathway or progression route, business education enhances individual effectiveness and establishes firm foundations for lifelong learning and for further specialist study and careers.

COURSES

S1 Course – 2010 Session

S1 students will follow a core Business course which will enhance their ICT skills as a tool for learning and life.  A range of software packages will be used including word processing, Internet, e-mail, presentation software, desk top publishing, databases, spreadsheets, graphics, digital photography, movie maker and web design.  Through themed units students will overtake experiences and outcomes from within the Technologies, Social Studies, Numeracy, Literacy and Health and Well-Being curriculum areas.  Students learn how to make effective use of ICT to support their learning across the curriculum.

The core course will continue through S2 and S3 where it will extend to embrace employability skills and enterprising skills and attitudes.  In S2-3, students will also be able to undertake elective courses in Business Management and/or Business Technologies with a view to further specialist study in S4-6.

S2 Courses – 2010-11 Session

In session 2010-11, S2 students (who will progress through the current SQA qualifications framework in S3-6) will extend their ICT skills whilst gaining a deeper understanding of business.  Students will explore personal financial education, social enterprise and may undertake further interdisciplinary work on projects within the context of other curriculum areas.

FACILITIES

The Business School has 4 well equipped ICT suites and is located in the Millennium wing, conveniently close to the Learning Resource Centre.  Two of our rooms have been refurbished to create flexible learning spaces.  Rooms are equipped with electronic whiteboards and are networked to the school intranet and the Internet.

EXTENDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

The Business School works in collaboration with other curriculum areas and with Business Partners to enrich the learning experience. For example:

Stock Market Challenge – a team of students experience the highs and lows of the financial markets.  Students have been winners/runners up in most years.

Business Dynamics – this programme brings in managers from public and private sector organisations to run workshops on core business skills of team working, problem solving, leadership and communication.

Standard Life ‘Step Up to Life’ Programme – a programme of speakers and workshops which aims to enhance employability and interpersonal skills.

Institute of Chartered Banking – a programme of speakers and workshops which aims to enhance understanding of personal and business finance.
