Curriculum Policy
Purpose
This policy provides an overview of the curriculum and is intended to:
• outline the philosophy, principles and practice of the planning and delivery of the curriculum
• serve as a record of the whole curriculum from S1 to S6
• offer a context and support for monitoring and evaluating
• describe progression from primary to secondary and onto the work place, Further and Higher Education.
Principles
The curriculum has been devised to meet learners’ and society’s needs and is based on the four capacities from The Curriculum for Excellence.
The curriculum:
• offers experiences for learners to achieve success
• follows the national 3-18 curriculum area guidelines
• provides deep, sustained and valuable learning for all learners
• equips learners with high levels of literacy, numeracy, knowledge and thinking skills and supports the development of their health and well being
• provides both academic and vocational courses which challenge, engage and motivate learners
• promotes learning across a wide range of contexts and experiences
• focuses on the preparation of learners for political, social, economic, spiritual and cultural involvement in society
• offers challenging, well-planned experiences to develop citizenship, enterprise and creativity
• prepares learners for Further and Higher Education and for the work place
Changes to the curriculum will be based on well-considered rationale, involving consultation with stakeholders and monitored and evaluated for impact on learning
