Aims and Introduction

Aims and Introduction

Art, by it’s very nature, is involved with emotions, feelings and an inquisitive response to the world around us. It is impossible to imagine a world without colour, uninfluenced, unshaped or enhanced by human hand.  Visual awareness is one of the most important factors in the learning process and engagement in a range of stimulating art activities plays an important part in the general development and education of the child.  Our aim is to encourage and foster the pupil’s natural reaction to our environment and to develop a healthy, creative and imaginative awareness of the visual world.

The department offers courses in Art and Design at all stages in the school, including a broadly-based general course in S1 and S2, Standard Grade in S3 and S4, Higher and Intermediate 2 in S5 and 6 and a Portfolio Preparation course for S6 pupils wishing to apply for entry to Further and Higher Education courses.  All courses include a wide range of practical and critical activities and appeal to pupils of all ability levels.  See section on Courses for more details.
