Aims and Introduction
Home Economics is an important part of the school curriculum. It provides a crucial link between home, school and the community in a realistic way. Home Economics is a subject which, promotes the acquisition of life-skills vital for Personal and Social Development of all pupils. To function properly, society needs people with these effective life skills who can bring technological capabilities to both the home and the work place. Home Economics is very much an Equal Opportunities subject. Home Economics involves a variety of skills, abilities and processes, in relation to knowledge and understanding, handling information; technology, organisation and management; in the context of health, materials and resources. It is designed to develop technological, creative, aesthetic, sensory and manipulative talents.
Within the department we aim to:-
- Provide an enjoyable, relaxed but disciplined medium through which interests, skills and knowledge relating to Home Economics can be fostered.
- Provide a stimulating learning environment
- Motivate all levels of ability
- Encourage the personal and social development of pupils by providing a variety of learning experiences.
- Develop creative, sensory and manipulative skills.
- Develop technological capabilities and to encourage the use of technology and the technological approach where necessary.
- Develop responsible attitudes with regard to safety, hygiene, health and nutrition, fabric and care of the environment.
Home Economics allows pupils to acquire skills and knowledge through focused practical work and research tasks. It gives pupils the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and attitudes by using their knowledge and practical skills within individual and group projects.
