LRC Update May 2008
News from the LRC May 2008
Thanks to a grant from the PTA, we'll be able to subscribe to a magazine for the use of S5/S6 in the reading area.
If there is a particular magazine you'd like us to get, please give your suggestion to Mrs Fry.
There are still, at the time of writing, a few remaining spaces available for the trip to the Edinburgh Book Festival on 22 August. If you are interested, plaese ask Mrs Fry or Mrs Shaw for details.

News Archive LRC February 2008
There have been some changes in the LRC recently. Computers throughout the school were upgraded, and although the number of PCs in the LRC have stayed the same (at 15), they are much faster and a real pleasure to use! The computing booking system remains the same - please speak to Mrs Fry about booking a computer for use during a class, or at interval or lunchtime.
The Scottish Borders Council library system is changing, and this is leading to some changes in the LRC. In the past, notices about overdue books were printed here in the school and distributed to pupils through form classes. In future, all notices will be sent directly from Library Headquarters when items are overdue, bringing our system in line with what already happens in all the public libraries (for adults and children). In addition, notices will also be sent home, when reservations requested are in the LRC and available to be picked up. Please bring the notice and your library card with you, when collecting a reservation.
Also, please remember, when handing books back to the LRC, to hand the book to the librarian on duty, to be put through the computer. If you put returned books on the trolley (or anywhere else), without giving them to the librarian, they are still out under your name, and you will receive overdue notices even if you no longer have the book. You are responsible for any books issued on your card, until they are checked in when scanned at the issue desk computer. (By the way, that's the reason why we ask you not to let a friend take books out in your card; if they don't return the book, you're the person who has to pay for the lost book.)
We've had two enjoyable events in the LRC recently. In order to celebrate Burns Night, we held a lunchtime Celebration of Scotland event. The Home Economics Department provided delicious snacks, and there were readings and performances by Mr Nisbet, Mr McFadyen, Miss Dunlop and PHS's own Three Pipers: Ross Brown, Tom Hamilton and Stuart Johnston, who played very loudly and very well. Their rendition of Queen's " We Will Rock You" was unexpected, and superb!
In a collaboration with the Goethe Institute in Glasgow and our Modern Languages Department, we also displayed a selection of books, in German and English, by German authors. A workshop was held for pupils who are studying German, with representatives from the Goethe Institute.
We shall soon be changing the break and lunchtime access. The school has a large roll, and in order to give everyone a fair chance to access LRC facilities, we shall in future give each yeargroup access on one day of the week:
Monday S5 Tuesday S4 Wednesday S3 Thursday S2 Friday S1
S6 may use the LRC during any of the above times. Also, if you are in S5 and need to study, please speak to Mrs Fry or Mrs McCormick, and we’ll let you in. Please book computers in the usual way, for break or lunchtime access.
New!!! The LRC now has a reading area for S5 and S6 pupils. We can’t provide coffee and biscuits, but you can sit comfortably while reading, studying or looking at the newspaper!
