Aims and Introduction

Physical Education in S1 and S2 is a continuation and progression of the work already experienced in the primary school.  Pupils will take part in a balanced programme of activities where the introduction and development of physical skills and affective development are of major importance.

Activities - Athletics, Basic Skills, Basketball, Dance, Fitness, Football, Gymnastics, Hockey, Rugby, Social Dance, Swimming, Volleyball.

Basic Skills is an S1 activity and is replaced by Volleyball in S2.  All other activities are taught in six week blocks (approx) in S1 and S2.

S3 and S4 physical education contains an element of choice, from activities experienced in S1 and S2, and from new activities.  The improvement of performance and the development of a positive attitude are important aspects of the course.

Activities - Pupils choose from the following groups :

Outdoor Team Games (Football, Hockey, Rugby).

Indoor Team Games (Basketball, Volleyball).

Outdoor Individual Activities (Cross Country, Orienteering).

Indoor Individual Activities (Badminton, Gymnastics, Table Tennis).

In S3 pupils may opt to take a two year Standard Grade Course.  This follows National Guidelines, includes pupil choice, new activities and exams at Credit, General and Foundation levels.

S5 and S6 physical education offers a choice of activities and is concerned mainly with participation and enjoyment.
