Business and enterprise are at the heart of national growth and development, and this is reflected in the place business education has in the curriculum. The provision offers opportunities for candidates to develop the crucial skills and knowledge which allow them to access, understand and contribute to the dynamic, complex business and enterprise environment. Whatever the career pathway or progression route, business education enhances individual effectiveness.

Courses

S1-2 ICT - students extend their ICT skills in word processing, Internet, e-mail, presentation software, desk top publishing, databases, spreadsheets, graphics, digital photography, movie maker and web design. Students gain an awareness of relevant health, safety and security issues. Students learn how to make effective use of ICT to support their learning across the curriculum.

 

S3-4 Standard Grade Business Management - provides knowledge, decision-making and problem solving skills relating to the management of organisations. The course poses questions of What is business?; How do businesses develop and perform?; What resources do businesses use?; How are businesses managed? Business Management students use ICT as a learning tool and in doing so enhance their ICT skills.

 

S3-4 and S5-6 Intermediate 1-2 Business Administration - using ICT has become part of the modern work environment to the extent that it is now an essential life and work skill. Students will be equipped with skills in a range of software packages that will enable them to make decisions and solve problems. Students also gain an understanding of the management of people and resources in organisations.

 

S5-6 I2 and Higher Business Management students explore the role of business in contemporary society; uses of ICT; decision making models; internal business structures; marketing, operations, human resource and financial management. Around a third of all students take the course as a new subject to diversify their subject portfolio and prepare themselves for the world of work.

 

S5-6 Microsoft IT Academy with PCP Passport an internationally recognised ICT skills development programme - delivered through education-industry partnership. Students complete units in a range of software packages and sit Microsoft's accredited exams over the Internet. Each unit passed gives automatic certification for the corresponding unit in the SQA PC Passport qualification.

 

Extended Learning Experiences students enjoy a range of experiences for example the Business Dynamics core business skills programme, Young Enterprise Scotland, Young International Trader, Eastgate Theatre project, Enterprise Fair, Stock Market Challenge, E-mentoring, Girls Go4IT. These experiences focus on the development of portable employability skills.

 

Facilities

The Business Education department has 3 well equipped ICT suites and is located in the Millennium wing, conveniently close to the Learning Resource Centre. Two of our rooms were recently refurbished to create flexible learning spaces. Rooms are equipped with electronic whiteboards and are networked to the school intranet and the Internet.
