Peebles High School

English/Drama/Media Studies

English plays a large role both in the academic and extra-curricular life of the school.  As a core subject English is compulsory from S1-S4, after which it becomes optional.

The full range of English courses is offered, from 5-14 in S1&2, through Standard Grade in S3&4, to Higher, Intermediate 2 & Intermediate 1 in S5 and finally to Advanced Higher in S6.

Mainstream English has traditionally incorporated Drama and Media Studies, but at PHS we are fortunate to be able to offer both as discrete subject areas with separate certification.

Drama is offered in S1&2 (5-14 common course), S3&4 (Standard Grade) and S5 (Higher). Media Studies is offered in S5&6 at Higher and Intermediate 2.

Pupils engage with a variety of texts, for example literary, dramatic and media, through which they develop their understanding and appreciation of the writer's, dramatist's or film-maker's craft.

Pupils also engage with themes and issues of importance through reading, discussion, viewing and performance. All three subject areas allow pupils to develop their creative, analytical and performance skills.

Pupils also have opportunities to develop interpersonal skills by working co-operatively in groups, for example in group discussion, or by creating group performance or film.

A wide range of extra curricular opportunities is offered to enrich pupils' learning experience, including theatre visits, drama workshops, visiting writers, public speaking, film-making workshops, film education days at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Shakespeare trip to Stratford-upon-Avon.
