Health & Life Skills
Why Health & Life Skills?
Home Economics within its very widest context promotes the acquisition of life skills vital for personal and social development of all students. By offering courses which provide students with practical experiences involving the development of technological, creative, aesthetic, organisational and management skills in the context of health, materials and resources we are equipping students with these skills. All courses offered are very much equal opportunities courses and every effort is made to facilitate the needs of individual pupils.
The connotations implied by the term Home Economics have resulted in the subject being viewed as having limited relevance to employment and in reality do not reflect the wide range of subjects currently taught within the Department. After consultation with students & staff it was decided to adopt a new title which reflected the diversity of the subjects on offer and the importance of these within the curriculum. Health & Life Skills was deemed to be more appropriate as both areas are central to the philosophy of all subjects offered. Health & Wellbeing is a key aspect of Curriculum for Excellence thus strengthening the importance of this subject area within the education system.
