Introduction of new Parent Council
Parent Council meeting
The first meeting of the new format Parent Forum – the term now describing all parents with pupils at the School – was held on Tuesday 11th September. The main purpose of this first Forum meeting was to explain the purpose and operation of the new Parent Council and to seek volunteer members. It is hoped that most of those who came along will attend the first Parent Council meeting and become its initial members, along with some members of the previous School Board who have offered to join the new body to provide some continuity and experience of issues at the School. This would then give us at least two parent representatives for each school year, in line with the target set in the new Parent Council’s constitution. The first Parent Council meeting is now set for 6.15pm on Wednesday 3rd October (not the end of September as previously advised) and will be in the LRC. These meetings are intended to be kept as informal as possible and all other parents are also welcome to come along and contribute their thoughts on the various matters to be discussed. An agenda will be posted on the School website in advance of the meeting. Thanks go to those parents showing an interest in joining the new Parent Council – your involvement will ensure we meet one of the key purposes of these changes in achieving a better overall representation of parents of pupils at all stages in the School.
The new 2007/08 academic year sees the Government’s parental involvement legislation taking full effect. Under this legislation parents of pupils at the school are to be known collectively as the Parent Forum. The Parent Forum has the right to form a new Parent Council which will replace the current School Board. At Peebles High School we hope to ensure that the new Parent Council will provide wider representation of parental views by amongst other things seeking two parents from each school year for membership of the Council. This will also hopefully improve continuity over future years. A copy of the constitution of the new Parent Council has been sent to all parents and you will also find a copy in this section of the school website. You will see from this that we plan to continue the successful PTA as a permanent sub-committee of the new Council and also plan to form a new Communications permanent sub- committee as this is an area that is always capable of further development and improvement. The following table gives dates we plan for meetings during the course of the year, with each Parent Forum meeting followed by a Parent Council meeting. Parents are welcome to come along to any of these meetings. We will aim to let you know in advance the topics up for discussion. Meanwhile if any parents have any questions about the new Parent Council please feel free to contact me. Keith Howell Chair, School Board Tel. : 01968 660886 email: kmhwl@hotmail.com
